‘The rite of Christian initiation … is designed for adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts’ (RCIA, #1)

Herein lies the mandate for parish catechumenal teams to take seriously the task of adult faith formation. Too often, we simply replicate a classroom situation, failing to acknowledge that adults learn differently to children and adolescents. As a team, study the following and then decide what steps you need to take to honour the principles of adult learning and group leadership.

AND REMEMBER … Adults retain

10% of what we read

20% of what we hear

30% of what we see

50% of what we both see and hear

70% of what we discuss with others

80% of what we experience personally

95% of what we teach, preach or present ourselves
